In The Name Of Love

Preach it, brother! This is Bono's acceptance speech at the NAACP awards. It starts at 4:30 into the video. It's kind of long, so if you want, fast forward the counter to about 8:55 on the video and watch the last couple of minutes. I dare you not to yell "Amen!" at your screen. :)

Hmmm. Shame on me, but I didn't yell,"Amen!" at my screen. The fact of the matter is that we will always have the poor among us, we will not be the generation to end it, and I wish Bono would stick to making good music.

I'm not saying we should sit on our laurels and watch people die. I am saying that I don't appreciate men whose income exceeds that of the GDP of a small country telling me that I need to do more for the poor. I know where my tax dollars go and I know where my donations go. I do not look at the plight of the poor and say, "oh, well." Furthermore, the United States gives more money (your tax dollars, I might add) to initiatives for food and health care in African nations than any other government in the world. For him to imply that it is white America's fault that the world has these problems is ridiculous. The real problem is tyrannical governments that do not serve their people! When you do your homework on some nations in Africa, you'll find hateful, selfish leadership who care nothing for their citizens. That's why they're dying from starvation, AIDS, malaria, etc. OH, and don't forget genocide. They are slaughtered like animals, too, but Bono isn't talking about that, is he?

Please, don't be so quick to endorse Bono. I know he's been endorsed and embraced by most of the evangelical community, but he is also one of the ring leaders for ONE religion for the world. We all need to be very careful in these last days.

Cyndi, that made me cry. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Jesus is in the face of the poor, and I'm sad that I don't spend much time hanging with Him there.

Leslie,

I totally understand what you're saying and appreciate your comment.

Just as you are "not saying we should sit on our laurels and watch people die," neither am I "so quick to endorse" or "embrace" Bono. I just happened to agree with what he said, especially those last two minutes. That's all. :)
